Learn How to Jump Start a Car Battery

Here at Nielsen Dodg Chrysler Jeep RAM, we want everyone to be able to know some car basics. One would be how to jump start a vehicle. If you've got someone with a running car and a set of jumper cables, you can do it, and it only takes a few simple steps!

  • Have a set up jumper cables, or find someone who has them to help you
  • Place both vehicles in part or neutral with the ignition shut off in both, and engage the parking brakes. The cars should be close together so the cables can reach each vehicle
  • Attach one of the red clips to the positive terminal to the battery of the car that needs a jump start
  • Attach the other red clip to the positive terminal of the vehicle that is going to provide the jump start
  • Attach one of the black clips to the negative terminal of the car that is going to provide the jump start
  • Attach the other side of the black clip to an unpainted metal surface of the vehicle that needs a jump start that isn't near the battery, like one of the struts that holds the hood open
  • Start the working vehicle and let the engine run for a few minutes, then try to start your vehicle
  • When the jump start works, and the vehicle starts keep the engine on, and driver around for at least 15 minutes so the battery is recharged. If it doesn't start the next time your battery isn't holding a charge and should be replaced. The same goes for if the jumpstart isn't working
